Bottom line: The only smart plug-in Level 2 charger worth recommending. If you rent or need portability, this is your charger. If you can hardwire, the Emporia gets you 48A for the same price.

The verdict#

The JuiceBox 32 occupies a unique niche: it's the only smart Level 2 charger that plugs into a standard NEMA 14-50 outlet without hardwiring. That makes it the obvious choice for renters, condo owners, or anyone who moves frequently and wants to take their charger with them.

The tradeoff for plug-in convenience is speed: 32A (7.7kW, ~25 mi/hr) versus 48A (11.5kW, ~37 mi/hr) for hardwired alternatives. For most overnight charging situations, 25 mi/hr is perfectly adequate — it adds ~200 miles in 8 hours. For high-mileage drivers needing faster charging, a hardwired charger is the better path.

The app and smart features are solid: scheduling, energy monitoring, and the JuiceNet platform. One note: Enel X Way US went through a bankruptcy process in 2023, which disrupted cloud services temporarily. The chargers continued to function locally during that period. This is a legitimate factor if long-term cloud service continuity is important to you.

Strengths
  • Plug-in — no hardwiring, no electrician for the charger itself
  • Portable — takes it when you move
  • Smart: scheduling, energy monitoring, app control
  • Works with all J1772 EVs; Tesla with adapter
  • NEMA 4 weatherproof rating
Weaknesses
  • 32A cap — slower than 48A hardwired alternatives
  • $599 — expensive for 32A (Emporia does 48A for $329)
  • Enel X Way cloud service disruption history (2023)
  • Requires NEMA 14-50 outlet (if you don't have one, add $200–$400)
